His Excellency Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi was appointed as the Minister of Climate Change and Environment for the United Arab Emirates in February 2016. H.E. Dr. Al Zeyoudi is also the UAE Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and was the Director of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. H.E. Dr. Al Zeyoudi first began his career as a reservoir engineer at the Abu Dhabi Marine Oil Company and then moved to Masdar, where he worked on advancing renewable energy technologies and solutions. The global population is expected to increase to 9.7 billion in 2050 and there are concerns about the capacity of agriculture to produce enough food for the growing population. By some estimates, food production will need to go up by about 60 percent either through increase in crop yields per unit area or expansion in the arable land by 2050 to meet the demand (World Population Prospects-the 2008 Revision, UN, 2009).
